Whether you’re clearing out your home ahead of a relocation, or you’re renovating your interior, your latest domestic project is likely to accumulate large quantities of waste. You may have hired a skip to help you to keep everything organised, where this waste will then be collected once you’ve completed the task at hand.
But what happens to your rubbish once it’s been taken away? Lots of waste trucks will make an important stop at their assigned waste transfer station, where it is here that rubbish from all kinds of locations is sorted and consolidated.
Read on to find out more about what happens to your rubbish at a dedicated waste transfer station.
Initial Sorting & Inspections
Once waste collection trucks have offloaded their cargo, this bulk of rubbish will need to be screened and sorted. Usually, this is undertaken with the help of a conveyor belt, where the initial sorting stage involves removing particularly oversized materials, or potentially hazardous items such as batteries or chemicals, where these cannot be sorted any further.
Separating Recyclables
The mix of rubbish will then be processed in order to separate out different kinds of recyclable materials. Magnets are used to extract ferrous metals such as iron and steel, while blasts of air are used to separate out lighter paper and plastic items. Infrared scanners may also be employed to identify specific materials such as PET plastics and glass.
Additional Specialist Sorting
Once identifiable recyclables have been removed from the waste pile, additional specialist sorting will be undertaken. This may involve the removal of organic waste for composting, as well as the disassembly of electrical components such as circuit boards. When this process is completed carefully, smaller parts can usually be salvaged from landfill.
Packing & Transportation
The sorted and categorised materials can then be packed up and transported to their different destinations. Recyclables will be compacted into bales and sent to a dedicated recycling facility, whilst non-recyclables will be dropped off at landfill sites or incinerated. Additionally, sorted organic matter will be sent to a composting facility.
